Fire Before and After.

9/25/2022 (Permalink)

Fire damage before and after. The sooner our team is called out, the better chances we have at restoring rather than replacing when it comes to damaged items.

Putting out a home fire is just the beginning. What you do thereafter can make a huge difference. The faster a restoration company can get out to help, the better are the chances they will restore more property and personal belongings versus having to replace them. And although this may depend on the extent and size of the fire, getting the fire turned off quick and having mitigation services begin immediately, makes all the difference in helping keep costs of replacement down and lessens the time of recovery. And let us not forget those items that do not have a price, like that piano that has been passed down for generations or that comfortable recliner that was a gift given to you by a loved.

SERVPRO of Beaumont/Banning understands that your home and personal items mean a lot and are priceless. As a company, we work hard and strive through our mitigation services to ensure that your home and personal property, when applicable, is restored fully to its preloss condition.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

There's More To a Fire Than You Realize

9/13/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Employees cleaning ceiling from smoke damage. Smoke damage needs to be cleaned properly.

Exposure to smoke, ashes, and soot from a fire can have harmful effects to your home and health. Long-term exposure to toxins found in smoke, ashes, and soot can contaminate and damage your home as well as have a damaging effect to your lungs and heart.

It's possible your home may have dangerous toxins.

If your home has recently been exposed to smoke, ashes, or soot from a fire, it's possible that dangerous particles and contaminates have settled into your home. And although smoke damage can be visible to the eye, it can also be invisible and hard to trace, hiding in hard to reach places. Behind furniture, attics, air ducks, and other air cleaning systems.

A simple clean or wipe down is not enough, and in most cases, can even worsen your situation.

Improper cleaning can further spread dangerous toxins to other areas of the house not affected by a fire. Turning on fans and other HVAC units too can further spread toxins throughout your home, making your home a fire and toxin hazard. Smoke odor and toxins may also remain in furniture, clothing, carpet, and other places after a fire, unless properly cleaned and deodorized. Professional chemicals and equipment are needed to eliminate smoke, ashes, soot, odor and other dangerous toxins. What to Expect During Fire Damage Restoration in Beaumont/Banning

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO immediately after the fire damage to ensure a speedy and efficient remediation process.

SERVPRO Provides Expert Advice and Mitigation of Fire & Smoke Damaged Properties

Fire damage restoration can be a stressful time for any homeowner in the Beaumont/Banning area. You have just experienced a harrowing incident, and it is understandable if you are feeling a bit overwhelmed. However, if you know what to expect during this time, it can be a bit easier to stay on top of things.

Here at SERVPRO, our team of experts strives hard to help you get through fire damage restoration as smoothly as we possibly can. Fire recovery is a multi-step process that takes time and patience. Here are a few things that you should expect from the process.

Assessment of the Damage

Assessing the damage is one of the first steps in restoration. The SERVPRO team of experts assesses the damage by visual inspection and determines the areas that need urgent attention. The team also determines the items that are restorable and the items that are not. Once they have gathered all the information, they provide you with a summary of the findings and also explain the best plan of action. You, and your insurance adjuster, if applicable, have the final say on salvaging or tossing building materials and belongings.

Extent of Cleaning

The SERVPRO team reviews the full extent of smoke, soot, and other fire damage. Our team has the skill set and experience to guide you through every step of the cleaning process. However, you have the final say regarding the extent of the cleaning. We help you to reach an informed decision by providing all the necessary information.

Deodorizing and Ductwork

Deodorizing is a huge part of fire damage restoration. We use ultra low volume and heat foggers that can tackle even the toughest of odors. In case you have a forced air heating system, our experts also examine the ducts for smoke and soot damage and provide you with options to deal with it.

Once you agree to the terms, our skilled professionals get to work and start the process of restoration. The time required for a complete restoration depends on the extent of damage and scope of cleaning.

Call SERVPRO of Beaumont/Banning today to schedule an inspection at 951.922.2900. Our experts are committed to helping you get your house to pre-fire conditions as soon as possible.

Smoke Detector

1/5/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke alarms save lives when properly installed and maintained, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). In homes, smoke alarms should be in every bedroom and on every level, including the basement. In office and commercial environments, check your state requirements or contact your local Fire Marshall to help ensure all codes are met. Test smoke alarms monthly using the test button. Smoke alarms with non-replaceable batteries need the entire smoke alarm unit replaced every ten years. Other alarms need batteries replaced every year and the unit replaced every ten years. If the alarm chirps signaling low battery, take the proper steps to replace the unit or the batteries immediately. Never disable or remove the battery from an alarm. Almost half of fires where smoke alarms were present but did not activate had missing or disconnected batteries (NFPA). In larger commercial facilities, hard wired or wireless smoke alarms offer benefits such as not needing to be tested as often and activating throughout the entire building if smoke is detected in just one area (NFPA). If you need help installing, testing or changing batteries in your smoke alarms, contact your local fire department, an electrician or the American Red Cross. Be sure your home or workplace has a fire emergency plan in place and conduct regular fire drills. For more information on Emergency Preparedness, contact  SERVPRO® of Beaumont/Banning and visit https://nfpa.org/ for more tips on Fire Safety and Precautions.

How to Properly Use a Fire Extinguisher

12/1/2021 (Permalink)

Important to recognize the different types of fire extinguishers

As a homeowner in the Beaumont/Banning area, you need to be prepared for emergencies. If you've ever had a house fire and had to call in professionals to restore your home, you understand the importance of having a fire extinguisher on hand. Following the steps below can ensure that you're using it correctly.

1. Assess the Situation

First, understand what you're dealing with. If the blaze is already too big, the best idea may be to call the fire department and get yourself and anyone else in the house to safety. If you can safely douse it with a fire extinguisher, you need to next make sure that you have the right type for whatever material is burning.

2. Use the Right Extinguisher for the Fire

Experts classify extinguishers based on the type of fire they can combat. These include:

  • Type A: for fires involving plastics, wood, textiles and paper
  • Type B: used on fires involving solvents, gasoline, oils, paints and other flammable liquids
  • Type C: for electrical fires, including plugged-in equipment like computers or appliances
  • Type D: for fires involving combustible powders or metals
  • Type E: commonly used for a kitchen fire involving fats or cooking oils

These letter classifications are always found on the sides of the extinguishers, many of which are rated for putting out fires of more than one type.

3. Remember: "PASS"

The PASS method is an easy way to remember how to use most fire extinguishers. Each letter in "PASS" stands for the first word of an operational step. The "P" tells you to pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher; it needs to be removed before operation. The "A" tells you to aim the nozzle. The nozzle should not be aimed at the top of the flames, but at the bottom, where the combustion is taking place. The first "S" tells you to squeeze the handle to start the flow, and the second one reminds you to sweep from side to side while spraying.

By acting quickly and following the instructions above, you can safely prevent fire damage before it has a chance.

Time To Get "Ready" for Wildfire Season

3/16/2020 (Permalink)

Here is an image CALFIRE has used for tip #6 how to prevent a fire this Wildfire Season

With all this downtime from State and National quarantines, now is a great time to make some small but effective changes to you your home to help prevent fire damage.

One of the tips that our local CALFIRE and Riverside County fire has suggested today is putting a metal screen to cap off your chimney and stovepipe outlets. If you're like me, you've always wondered how small the screen openings needed to be. CALFIRE posted about it on Twitter this morning. The openings should be no smaller than 3/8 inch and no bigger than 1/2 an inch.

This is important because the embers get trapped by the screen instead of flying out and free to catch trees and brush on fire, your roof even.

So, this Wildfire Season do everything you can to prevent a fire in your neighborhood. Follow our blogs for more information as we move closer to the season and

ALWAYS make us your second call if you have a fire emergency.

5 Basic Tips for your Emergency Fire Escape Plan

1/7/2020 (Permalink)

Emergency residential fire escape map.

Most people know the importance of having a fire escape plan, but many are unsure on how to go about setting one. Here are five basic tips to consider when planning an emergency fire escape.

1. Smoke Detectors

Having an alert system is an essential element for a solid escape plan. If you own smoke detectors, make sure they have batteries and work properly. If you don't own any, don't have enough, or need help installing it, a professional service can help.

2.Involve Family

When planning a fire escape route, it is important to involve the entire household. Bring your family together for a meeting and discuss the different escape routes in each room. Ensure that everyone understands and is prepared for any scenario. Drawing a picture or map may help, especially for small children.

3.Unblock Exits

During a fire, you will not have time to move furniture or appliances away from the exits. It is important that you keep all exits clear in order to evacuate as quickly and as safely as possible.

4. Choose Meeting Location

Set a location for everyone to meet once they have evacuated. This is especially important for young children who may be lost or disoriented outside. Having a meeting location will also help determine who is present and who is missing.

Home Fire Evacuation Plan: What to do Before, During and After a Fire

12/10/2019 (Permalink)

This is a garage of a home where the fire started and then spread to the rest of the home

Having to evacuate your home because of a fire may be one of the most scary things that can happen to a homeowner. It means that you could be in incredible danger, and it might mean that your home could be completely lost. An evacuation means you have to move quickly and effectively. That means having a plan set out ahead of time so you are prepared to go at a moment’s notice.

Here’s everything you need to do before, during and after a fire.

Before A Fire Evacuation

Preparation is the most important part of a good evacuation plan. There are several things you do before a fire to make sure you are ready.

Disaster Relief Kit

A disaster relief kit, sometimes called a go bag, contains any essentials that you might need if you have to evacuate in a hurry. Make sure to have extra cash in there, along with extra clothing items, like sweatshirts and footwear. You should also pack emergency health information, but make sure that it is placed in a waterproof bag to keep it safe. Extras of medication should be in there, along with an extra phone charger. There are lots of sample evacuation kits on the internet, so do a search to pick and choose the items that best suit your family.

Family Preparation

There are also certain things that everyone in your household should know if there is a fire. For instance, you should pick out a place for everyone to meet up at if you have to leave in a hurry. This can be in front of a neighbor’s house, for example. Make sure that everyone’s phone numbers are saved in all family members phones so that you can easily communicate if you get separated. Sometimes, a fire can affect entire neighborhoods or even municipalities. If this is the case, you should have some place you can escape to in every possible direction.

Transportation

Make sure that your car always has at least a half tank of gas. If the fire is affecting an entire area, you may need to drive a distance to get away to safety. If you do not have a car, make sure that you have a plan in place and know exactly how you will get away.

During An Evacuation

You will have to think fast while you are evacuating. It is best to already know what you want to do, so you can make the best decisions and keep everyone safe.

Communications

Do your best to keep in touch with everyone from your home at all times. If the cause of your evacuation is a wildfire, then there may be power lines down and your phones may not work. Or, you may have family members that cannot get to where you are. Always listen to the instructions from officials, such as the firefighters and police. They have more information and will know what the safest course of action is. If it is a wildfire that is affecting more than just your home, then you should also listen for emergency updates on news radio and weather stations.

Pets

Do not forget about your pets. Part of your preparation can be to have them well-trained enough to come when you call. Be sure that your pets are in a place where you can easily retrieve them.

Health and Safety

Once you are out of the building, check everyone for injuries and other issues. Emergency responders will be able to give everyone a check over as well. When it comes to being exposed to smoke, there may be unseen issues affecting you, so it is never a bad idea to head to the hospital to get checked out.

After An Evacuation

Once the fire is extinguished, you may be tempted to head back into your home to survey the damage. Do not do so until an authority has stated that it is safe, as damage to the structure may have occurred. In some cases, a home may need to be closed off until it is repaired for people to enter safely.

The best plan of action at this point is hiring a professional fire restoration contractor to help you restore and rebuild your property.

Experiencing a fire in your home can be overwhelming. But, by being proactive and creating a fire evacuation plan, you are taking the first step towards preparing your family for the unexpected.

FIRE DAMAGE . . . WHAT NOW?

Soot damage removal the SERVPRO way

A simple clean or wipe down is not enough, and in most cases, can even MAKE THINGS WORSE. Improper cleaning can further spread dangerous toxins to other areas of the house not affected by a fire. Turning on fans and other HVAC units can further spread toxins throughout your home, making your home a fire and toxin hazard. Smoke odor and toxins may also remain in furniture, clothing, carpet, and other places after a fire, unless properly cleaned and deodorized. Professional chemicals and equipment are needed to eliminate smoke, ashes, soot, odor and other dangerous toxins. Preparing and Informing yourself for a fire can be the best thing you can do for your home and your health.

6 THINGS TO DO AFTER A FIRE

5/1/2019 (Permalink)

Soot removal after a fire by SERVPRO fire specialist

We’re not going to kid you. Fire damage restoration is tough work. People call SERVPRO of Beaumont/Banning frequently to ask for advice on how to clean up after a fire.  Here are seven of the best tips we give people who ask about fire damage restoration.

Most people can put these tips into practice. But remember that fire damage restoration takes time, work, and skill. Realistically consider whether you want to try these ideas on your own or whether you’d be better off hiring the highly trained staff of SERVPRO of Beaumont/Banning who will guarantee their work.

  1. Remove Smoke Damage

With any fire you’ll have a degree of smoke damage to your walls, wall paper, and paint. If the smoke damage is not too serious, you should be able to scrub it clean with detergents and bleach. Soot from smoke damage is greasy stuff, so always try to dust as much of it off from a surface before trying to scrub the surface clean. Often, you’ll want to repaint, but make sure all surfaces are clean and dry before you paint.

  1. Limit Activity & Other Simple Fire Damage Restoration Steps

Until your house is restored, limit your activity and movement in the house. This helps prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets. Keep people’s hands clean so you don’t further soil upholstery, walls, and woodwork. Protect your things by placing clean towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery, and carpet traffic areas. Before you clean know the best cleaning method for that particular cleaning job (one example: Clean and protect chrome with a light coating of petroleum jelly or oil.) Wash both sides of the leaves on your houseplants. Change your HVAC filter and tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers.

  1. Get Rid of Mold & Mildew

Firefighters are great. They save many a live and many a home. But they do introduce mold and mildew into houses when they must use water to extinguish the fire. SERVPRO of Beaumont/Banning highly recommends you hire fire damage restoration professionals to deal with mold and mildew. Mold and mildew can cause serious health problems. It’s difficult for a nonprofessional to know for certain if all the areas affected by the mold and mildew are cleaned properly. And mold and mildew can contaminate your furniture, carpets, clothing, mattresses, walls, and vents. The best thing you can do immediately is to air out every room and clean out all vents and filters.

  1. Replace Carpets. Clean And Dry Your Floors

Your floors and carpets end up absorbing the worst of the damage from all the water used to put out a fire. In almost every case, SERVPRO of Beaumont/Banning recommends that you pull up any carpets that have water damage and replace them. Water can also seep underneath vinyl flooring and into the cracks in hardwood. You must address this. If you have experience with flooring, you can lift it up and clean under it BUT . . . calling SERVPRO is a better for your peace of mind.

  1. Avoid Smearing Soot Into Clothing

Cleaning smoke damage from clothing is one of the biggest jobs you’ll have after a fire. Make sure you don’t smear the greasy soot into the clothing or just throw the smoky clothes into the wash. Often times dry cleaning is the best bet, and you should ask around local dry cleaners to see if any have experience with post-fire laundry.

  1. Scrub, Soak, And Cleaning Dishes

Dishes are also important items to clean thoroughly after a fire because they will be in contact with your food. Scrub all dishes well, let them soak in a solution of bleach and water (2 tablespoons of bleach per gallon) for at least 20 minutes and scrub some more for safety. When in doubt, if a dish, pot, or pan won’t come clean, cut your losses and throw it out – especially rubber or wooden dishes that absorb smoke.

PASS AREA WILDFIRE DAMAGE

3/13/2019 (Permalink)

Soot is a sticky hard to remove substance we can help.

The active wildfires here in Southern California are increasing their impact as growing Santa Ana winds add fuel to these devastating blazes that are encroaching in our area. According to the New York Times, new fires broke out in Malibu on December 7, with at least 96,000 acres already burned in the Ventura area and 116,000 acres in Los Angeles County. Evacuations have closed hundreds of schools and forced 200,000 of our neighbors to seek safety.

The “Idyllwild Fire” in the Riverside County area continues to burn with the aid of strong winds. This fire has caused the closure of the parts of the 10 freeway and a boil-water advisory was issued for Western Riverside County.

SANTA ANA WINDS:

The Santa Ana winds that are enabling the fires to rapidly increase their reach can have speeds in excess of 60 miles per hour. They are not expected to diminish until Friday into Saturday at the earliest. The National Weather Service has warned of “very rapid fire growth” in this area. SERVPRO Meteorologist Lela Davis said that the Santa Ana winds were already very dry when they reached the Southern California valley, allowing them to quickly pull moisture out of vegetation, increasing the risk for wildfires. For the first time ever, a purple wind warning was issued for today under the color-coded system used to advise about high winds. This purple warning pushed wind expectations from the “high” category to “extreme”.

READY TO HELP

Here at SERVPRO of Beaumont/Banning we are monitoring this wildfire situation closely. Our thoughts are with those neighbors who may be put in harms’ way during this event. In many cases, a wildfire can result in a total loss for a home or business, but in others it may be a partial loss, or can result in mild smoke damage. SMOKE AND SOOT CLEANUP

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Beaumont / Banning / Desert Hot Springs Home

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Beaumont / Banning will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

We had the opportunity to help households get back on track after being affected by a disastrous fire. Nothing gives us greater satisfaction than to know we did a difference in people’s lives. Here are some of the testimonials of people we had the opportunity to help.

“On December 7, 2017 our home was involved in the Lilac fire. 75 of our neighbors lost their homes. We were one of the lucky ones. Although our home was spared, there was smoke damage. Tracy and her SERVPRO team were wonderful. She made me feel everything was going to be ok. Tracy reassured us when we moved back in, the smoke smell would be to a minimal if not gone all together.  It was gone when we got home. And our home was cleaned inside and out. They did a wonderful job. It almost felt as it nothing has every happened. I feel Tracy went up and above what she needed to do and we will be forever grateful.” — Maureen Smith in Fallbrook, CA.

“The pro part of SERVPRO was pretty evident in the professionalism with which they showed in getting our house and contents cleaned. They did a very thorough job. When you are affected with something like a wild fire it is nice to have something go right.” — Samuel David Murdock in Fallbrook, CA.

Banning and Beaumont - What to do if your house smells smoky from burned food - and a GREAT recipe!

7/17/2016 (Permalink)

Frijoles de la Olla are delicious! Read the recipe for a Crock-Pot beans recipe to make sure that you don't burn them!

There isn't a whole lot that beats the taste of "Frijoles de la Olla," a nice big pot of freshly cooked pinto beans. A dash of pepper, a sprinkle of cumin - simmered up in a big pot for hours, filling the air with the essence of a Mexican kitchen. Just the thought of it sends my tastebuds into overload with anticipation!

BUT... have you ever burned the beans? Burning beans can very quickly turn the smell of heavenly legumes into a hellish nightmare.

Sometimes, when boiling a pot for 3+ hours, people get distracted and forget about the bubbling stew on the stove.  Maybe someone wants to go out for a jog, maybe they get an unexpected call from friends, and the beans are FORGOTTEN!

It is very rare for a fire to break out from a pot of forgotten beans. Unfortunately,  the one thing that is unavoidable is the SMELL!

Burned beans have a tendency to permeate EVERY surface in the home.  Furniture, rugs, wood, clothing - they are all susceptible to the overpowering aroma caused by the scorched legumes.

What should you do if you burn the beans?

1) THROW THE BEANS AWAY! - Once burned, they cannot be salvaged.  Sorry!

2) Open all windows and turn on the fan of your AC. - You want to get the smoke out of the house as soon as possible.

Here is a recipe for "Frijoles de la olla" that you can do in a crock-pot.  Much safer than leaving a boiling pot on the stove!

(from "The Other Side of the Tortilla")

CROCK-POT FRIJOLES DE LA OLLA

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 6 hours

No-fuss recipe for frijoles de la olla made in a slow-cooker with pinto beans.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups frijoles pintos (pinto beans)
  • 2 cups chicken broth (substitute with vegetable broth for a vegetarian version)
  • 4 cups boiling water
  • 1/2 of a white onion, sliced 1/4 inch-thick
  • 1 chile guajillo
  • 1/2 of a small head of garlic (about 4-6 cloves)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground cumin
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt (to be added in last 45 minutes of cooking)

Instructions

  1. First, rinse your beans under cool water to remove any dirt or debris and get rid of any broken beans. There’s no need to soak the beans overnight!
  2. Layer the onion slices along the bottom of the crock-pot. Place the beans directly over the top of the onions. Tear off the stem of the chile and tuck it into the beans. Add the chicken broth. Remove the papery skin from the garlic cloves and place in the crock-pot whole. Add the ground cumin.
  3. You’ll notice the chicken broth isn’t enough to cover the beans and keep all the ingredients moist while cooking. Add 4 cups of boiling water over the top, making sure all the ingredients are under the broth and water and then put the cover on the slow-cooker.
  4. Turn the heat on to high for 5-6 hours (individual slow-cookers can vary slightly in temperature). If the beans start to get dry during cooking, add 1-2 extra cups of boiling water. I only had to add about one cup in the last hour. You can substitute boiling chicken broth in place of the extra boiling water if you like. Add the salt in the last 45 minutes of cooking and stir it in gently to incorporate.
  5. The beans should be soft to bite and have a nice broth when they’re finished, but shouldn’t be watery.

A few notes: if you don’t have a guajillo chile at home but you have other dried chiles, any other red chile you like and have is a fine substitute. If you have frijoles bayos instead of pintos, that’s a fine substitute as well. To prep this dish the night before, add everything to the crock-pot except the liquids and salt. The next day, add the liquid and turn on high. If you’re planning to let this cook while you’re at work all day, use a slow-cooker that has a timer that will turn the heat off or to a very low “keep warm” setting after the cooking time. You can then add the salt, reheat them for 30-60 minutes in the slow-cooker and enjoy!
